Blue Ocean Channel:

I tell people all the time that while my two primary materials are wood and resin, the intangible third element that is intrinsically linked with my work is light. Light makes the nuances in resin come alive. Light brings out the brilliance and chatoyance to wood that’s been worked, sanded and smoothed to incredibly high grits. I’m constantly thinking about light in my work, how to incorporate it into my approach and, where possible manipulate it.

Blue Ocean Channel is an experiment in this process, a new approach in how to bring natural light into the piece and reflect it back through my medium to enhance the brilliance.

In Blue Ocean Channel, my goal was to evoke sunlight moving through an ocean’s depth and turbulence.

Another approach in view here to creating a different sense of depth and movement. The pieces of wood in this piece are about 1 1/2” thick. That’s the amount of room I have to create whatever effect I’m going for.
