River of Friendship: Silver Maple #2

This piece came together like jazz. Beyond the sanding stages of the wood, the process is quite like a dance. Movement between control, intention, acceptance and improvisation. Every work for me is different. Some find me leaning into big, broad, universal ideas while others have been much more personal or introspective but always with Balance permeating throughout.

I really love this slab of Silver Maple.  It’s got such brilliance and beauty that comes out when it’s deeply worked.  Just days earlier I had started working on it without knowing what it would be used for, only that there were some spots on the slab that required attention regardless of how it would be used and it gave me a purpose during that time of the lockdown.  Little would I know that just a few days later a dear friend from the past reached out to commission this work for her husband, also a dear friend.
