Materials and Partners

As simply stated as possible, my materials are wood and resin. Of course, as with most things, there’s more to it than that. I think about the choices I make quite a bit in my work and upon reflection. I’ll be the first to acknowledge that I don’t have the practice down perfect. I can’t say that I’ve cracked the code of how to have no impact while also having an impact.

While I am always looking to evolve my practice, some things I have done to be educated and conscious about my choices are:

  • Employ traditional wood working techniques for solid, quality and durable construction made to last.

  • Work Exclusively with Urban Rescue Wood: This is wood from urban environments that has been felled because of damage, disease or normal senescence, and is diverted from the waste stream to be recycled into quality live edge lumber. All this wood is sourced locally. This benefits the planet in a number of ways including helping to reduce deforestation, keeping all the carbon that was absorbed during the trees’ life sequestered, and saving the urban wood from ending up as mulch or firewood to be burned.

    • Street Tree Revival : They deserve a special mention. This is one of those places I go that I feel so good about supporting with my business. I want to see them succeed. Everyone you may happen to encounter at Street Tree Revival is extremely helpful and genuinely friendly. Their business model reflects an evolved approach to viewing their potential beyond profit.

  • I only work with Bio Based Resins: These are Zero VOC products that maximize the use of bio based materials such as soy, corn and hemp while minimizing the use of ingredients that could be harmful to people or the planet. That’s what initially drew me to using these resins, but what has kept me using them is their emergence also being some of the industry leaders in terms of overall quality.

  • Use finishing products utilizing natural oils and waxes that are free from harmful chemicals, solvents, VOC’s, and hardeners.
